Early-stage infestations typically involve fewer than 10 bed bugs concentrated around a single harbourage point, usually the mattress or headboard. At this stage, treatment is straightforward and can often be completed with a single spray treatment.
Moderate infestations show an established colony with multiple harbourage points within a single room — mattress, headboard, bedside furniture, and skirting boards. Heat treatment is typically recommended at this stage for complete, single-visit elimination.
Severe infestations involve multiple rooms, heavy faecal spotting, large numbers of eggs and shed skins, and visible bed bugs during daylight hours. These require whole-property heat treatment and may benefit from a combination approach.
